thanksgiving 2010

Thanksgiving was a little scattered this year.  Chris had to work on Thursday, then all day Saturday and into Sunday (the lovely 30-hour shift).  So the Waynicks came up Thursday night and we cooked thanksgiving meal on Friday.  I hauled myself down to Oak Ridge on Saturday morning and spent the weekend with my fam- it's a rare occasion to get all three sisters together, so it was a happy time!  Here are a few pics from the 4-day weekend:

I attended yet another baby shower last week.  We had a good time- I really love buying baby gifts!  If I could get my act together, I'd start making the gifts I give.  Cute burp cloths, for example, would be nice.

smoky mtn vacation

Christopher and I spent a much-needed vacation in the smoky mountains this month. 

Thursday evening... 

On the way to East TN, the brakes started making noise in the Hyundai.  This led to all four brake pads and rotors getting replaced when we got to Oak Ridge.  There went our entire budget for our vacation. :-\

Vacation Day 1- 10/8/2010

We spent Friday in Oak Ridge with my parents.  Christopher went flying with dad and I ran around with momma all day.  :)  We had a delicious steak dinner with the fam, then drove to Pigeon Forge and stayed at a hotel.

Day 2- 10/9/2010

It was beautiful on Saturday!  We slept in, ate a free breakfast at the hotel, then shopped the outlets in Pigeon Forge.  Talk about some good deals.

Day 3- 10/10/10
Slept in again, ahhhhh, ate another free breakfast, then made our way up to the cabin in Gatlinburg.  It was another gorgeous day, so we went hiking at Laurel Falls.

Day 4- 10/11/10

Monday was spent cooking breakfast, hiking at Grotto Falls, and eating out. 

Day 5- 10/12/10

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHRISTOPHER!  :)  First thing- Pancake Pantry.  And we didn't have to wait for a table, plus we thought it was funny that we got #12 in line.  I am easily amused.

After breakfast, we went hiking at Alum Caves Bluff.  It was pretty rough- a 5 mile round trip... but I made it.

Day 6- 10/13/10

I was so tired by Wednesday, so we did a little bit of biking, played in the river, then met my mom and her friend for dinner that evening at Applewood Farmhouse.

Drove back to Lexington on Thursday and got massages at Lexington Healing Arts Academy.  The perfect ending to a fun, relaxing vacation.

Chris had Tuesday off, so I left work around 1:30 and we went hiking.  We had such a great time and really enjoyed being outside and spending some quality time together.

We hiked up to the Kentucky River Overlook... it's no East TN Smokey Mountain trail, but very pretty nevertheless.  :)

markey cancer center

I have accepted a position as a Clinical Research Associate at the Markey Cancer Center at UK.  I’ll be working with protocols involving Solid Tumor research.  I start August 30!

  

I was not looking to change jobs.  I actually really love my job at the Neurology clinic and I love my Alzheimer's patients and their families.  It has been really hard saying bye to them one at a time.  But in May, a former co-worker of Christopher’s moved over to MCC and let him know that an opening was coming for a CRA and she thought I should apply.  That got the ball rolling and two months later I was offered the job. 

 

It was a really tough, prayerful decision.  I eventually resolved that if God wanted me to make the move, I would be offered the position and the details would work themselves out.  The benefits are hard to resist.  UK-HMO insurance is $26 per month for employee only.  Yeah, I did say $26.  Since all my docs are at UK anyway, this is great and mucho-convenient. The main motivator for changing jobs was to be on the same campus as hubs.  When he's working long hours and it feels like days since I've seen him, we might actually get to grab a bite to eat together... or maybe a Starbucks.  :)

 

My decision-struggle came because my co-worker (and the only other study coordinator at our office) is out on maternity leave until the middle of September.  This leaves the doc by himself starting on the 30^th until she gets back.  He is brilliant and will do just fine, but I feel so bad leaving him without a coordinator!  I have offered to continue working PRN in the evenings to help him with charts and paperwork, etc. but I haven’t heard back from administration on that one.  Doubtful they’ll let me do that, but I had to offer.

 

I have learned an immense amount about Alzheimer’s disease, which has proven most useful in the diagnosis of my grandmother.  I have been able to share valuable information with Papaw and my parents to aid in her care.  I know this job was meant to be for the time I was here- I am so grateful. 

 

With that said, I am really excited about this opportunity!  I have wanted to do cancer research for quite some time and now I finally have the chance.

8/11/2009 worst.day.ever.

One year ago today was undeniably the worst day of my life.  I was admitted to the hospital (for the second time) with mysterious lung nodules… but in much more pain than the earlier 2-day stay at UK.  My fever was 104 point something.  Can someone please throw me in tub of ice?!  The piercing pain in my chest convinced me I must be having a heart attack.  I was also certain that a demon was stabbing a jagged knife into my left side and occasionally twisting it around for fun.  My leg and ankle joints throbbed and the inflamed nodules on my calves made it impossible to walk.  Not to mention I couldn’t breathe. 

I remember being extremely hungry that evening.  I hadn’t eaten much in two weeks- mostly only rice, like my Granny used to make it- with butter, salt and milk.  So my sweet husband volunteered to bring me real food at the hospital.  I vividly recall puking up the Qdoba chicken nachos I had woofed down in attempts to satisfy my starving body.  I had ignored my nausea.  Stupid me.  I dreaded the vomit, not just because I hate vomit, but because the retching worsened the already excruciating chest and side pain. 

I remember the poor IV staff at Good Sam trying to start fluids four different times.  I eventually demanded that they stop trying- my veins were too shriveled up.  When I later requested my medical records, the chart stated “patient refused fluids.”  Not entirely correct.  I simply refused the 5^th attempt of an IV needle digging around in my dehydrated arm.  [Thank goodness the IV tech at UK stuck me first try.  I wish I knew her name.  She deserved a gold star.]

Good Sam hospital didn’t keep me long- I was transported to UK a.s.a.p. by ambulance.  I wonder how much that cost my insurance company.  It was the bumpiest, most miserable ride I have ever experienced.  If you can avoid riding in an ambulance, I advise to do so.  Stretcher wheels need serious shock improvement as well.  I would rather have ridden in a regular car with my mommy and had Christopher scoop me out of the car and carry me in the hospital to my bed.

I don’t remember when I was finally able to receive some Tylenol suppositories for my fever.  Bless my mother for being a nurse and giving these to me.  There were a lot of things I let my mother do to me in the hospital that I would never let her do had I been sane.  I just knew I was very sick and needed help.  Mom, I love you.

The following days I did not really get better.  I think they sliced my chest wall and lung open on the 13^th sometime.  I still have residual pain from those scars- usually when I exercise or stretch my left arm too far one direction.  Apparently I have permanent metal staples in my lung.

I’ve already detailed my hospital experience in previous blogs.  I have just had it on my mind today because it is August 11.  Has it really been a year already?

I thank God for allowing me to survive and for growing me, mostly spiritually.  And for letting me see how much my family and friends love me.  I’m pretty sure my mother-in-law saw me in the shower and I’m pretty sure I didn’t care.  And nothing will be able to separate me from my husband- he is an amazing man.

I have been on Prednisone for a year now, with approximately two 4-week breaks.  I confess it is wearing on me.  I think I've gone crazy.  Soon I will be done with them.  Soon…

Anyway, love on your family today- give them hugs and kisses and tell them how grateful you are for their existence.  I know I am so very grateful for mine.

car wash, yeah!

My co-worker was telling me today that she washed her car this weekend, so I got a wild hair and decided I should wash mine immediately.  It was brutally hot, so I didn't mind getting wet with the hose.  Plus I probably ate 10,000 calories today thanks to my prednisone food cravings, so I needed the exercise for sure.

I found this Blue Coral Super Foam Car Wash in the garage.  I am certain that I didn't buy it.   Previous owner must have left it, along with the fourteen-hundred other miscellaneous garage gifts...

My 5'2" stature is quite problematic for washing tall trucks... so I left the top dirty.  

I don't think anyone will notice.

After my washing spree, I watered my poor little plants and cleaned up the driveway.  I am always fascinated at how much soap you can squeeze out of a giant car-washing sponge.  I must have stepped on that thing 25 times while spraying it with the hose and soap gushed out of it every time.  I eventually gave up because I desperately wanted a cold shower... do not pass Go, do not collect $200.  I intended to clean out my car and vacuum it, but as I said, I was miserably hot.

I'll save the car-vacuuming-adventure for another wild hair.

I got my 6-month hair trim today:

I am trying to grow my hair out long.  It grows very slowly.
